Our first steps into a new life

Every adventure has to start somewhere… and here we are: embarking into a journey towards a more sustainable, independent and healthier life.

Originally, I was hoping to start this first post with great news: “We just signed the contracts to purchasing a beautiful piece of land south of Lleida in Catalonia!”.

Well, Sara and I came close to making it a reality. However, just when we thought we are only formulating some details of the contract, we couldn’t come to an agreement with the current owners. Back to square one.

Our current life and starting point

At the time of writing, Sara and I live in a city close to Barcelona. It’s dirty, it’s noisy, it’s crowded and we don’t totally feel at home here.

I work as a web developer while Sara is working in real estate. Because we are not living above our limits, we are able to save money month after month. Money, we are happy to invest in our life goal: our own home.

There are already a lot of things we do that align with our vision.

If it’s not raining, I take my bike to work. It takes me exactly the same time as going by metro. Yet, I don’t spend 40 € every month on tickets and I get my workout on top of that. Admittedly, it’s not always easy to get up in the morning and hop onto the bike but it’s totally worth it.

We have our own little terrace garden. Spring has just started and our plants are about to go wild. We even make our own compost from food scraps. It does not stink and every year we get around 30L of nutritious soil – for free!

Besides, we like to cook our own meals. And there is a lot you can do in the kitchen to improve your own lifestyle. The quality of the meals we cook is decent and way cheaper than eating out. Yes, It takes time and some skill – but it’s a lot of fun.

Our vision and destination

We dream of a future in which we have a house on a piece of land. Something, we can call our own and that can provide us all the things we need: food, water, and electricity. All this without having to spend hundreds of Euros every month on utility bills.

This dream started when we first heard about a different kind of housing: Earthships.

Those houses are capable of keeping the temperature at comfortable levels. be it in summer or winter, day or night, without having an AC. The design also describes a simple yet effective way of reducing water usage to 25%!

This was our red pill! It just dawned on us that our current way of living just doesn’t make much sense and we need to change that. We are not necessarily striving for living in a true Earthship but we want to apply as many principles of it as possible.

How do we get there?

We have to learn a lot more. On top of that, we need enough money to buy us the right land and the materials and tools for our house.

Knowledge is key. The life we envision requires us to know how to take care of ourselves and the planet. How do we grow our own food? How to power our house off the grid? What can we do to reduce our carbon footprint? How do we stay healthy?

Knowledge will also help us find ways to reduce expenses and earn more on the side. For instance, deciding to take the bike to work paid off after just 6 months.

We don’t have to go alone

One of the main reasons for me to write this blog is to share our experiences. We hope that they will inspire you and give you ideas to improve your life and the life of others, too!

Also, you can learn from our mistakes. Nobody knows all the answers, and neither do we.

We would be thrilled if you accompany us on our way:

  • let us know what you think
  • give us tips
  • correct us if we are wrong

And we will keep you updated with what we learn and how our project is going.
